Cheaper/older alternatives to the QBP all-roads/gravel tourers etc?

If you want an old beater project, something to fuck around with and build up from parts, search for a 90's 700/720/750/790. Same geometry as the old 520's, but with MTB bars, drivetrain and shifters.

700 is straight gauge cromoly main triangle, hi-ten fork and stays. 720 is the same with a cromoly fork. 750 adds a double butted frame and cromoly stays. 790 adds a double butted fork.

Since they were based off the 520, they're prime candidates for a drop bar conversion with none of the wonky geometry issues that usually crop up with hybrid or MTB conversions. Cantilever brakes, so they're compatible with road levers.

They'll take a 130mm rear wheel pretty easily. I've run up to a 38c/40mm ETRTO tire under fenders with clearance to spare.

There are some serious downsides though. It's a 90's bike that's floppy in the wrong directions and harsh over bumps, and you'll probably only ever see the heavy 700&720 for sale. Threaded headset. Stem replacements are expensive and you've got a limited selection of handlebars: mostly old and used. Brifters probably can't shift the stock MTB triple chainring because the BB spindle is to wide (haven't tried it but others report problems)
