Chelsea chase Leicester forward Slimani

Chelsea have made an approach to Leicester City to sign Islam Slimani on loan as they seek to provide Antonio Conte with a new centre forward. The move for the powerful Algeria international follows attempts to recruit Andy Carroll from West Ham United and Peter Crouch from Stoke City.

Like the two veteran Englishman, Slimani would be eligible to be included in Chelsea’s Champions League squad, allowing the London club to loan out Michy Batshuyai for the remainder of Conte’s second season as manager. Leicester are open to selling Slimani – signed from Sporting for an initial €30m (currently £26.5m) in 2016 – but have so far proved unreceptive to a loan move.

Conte has pushed Chelsea to provide him with experienced back-up for the centre-forward role in every transfer window he has spent with the club. The Italian has extremely limited faith in Batshuyai, who was signed for around £33m against Conte’s wishes in the summer of 2016 and has started only three Premier League matches under him.

Chelsea are also looking at a deal to bring Edin Dzeko back to English football from AS Roma. While the Serie A club are open to selling the 31-year-old if their financial terms are met, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international has already played Champions League football this season and could not be added to Chelsea’s squad for the knock-out rounds.
