Child lacks empathy?

She’s not harming animals or doing anything I would consider major red flags.

An example of her lack of empathy. We were trick or treating one year and went to a house with its light on. When we rang the doorbell, a lady who had been crying came to the door, explained her husband was in the hospital dying, and she forgot to turn her light off. We apologized profusely and went to go on our way and the entire time my daughter was talking to her friend about how horrible this lady was for having her light on when she knew it was Halloween. Obviously what the lady had been through was too complicated for a child to understand, but the lady was visibly upset and I know my daughter could read that and chose to comment anyway. When we watch movies, she understands what emotion a character is feeling but I have never seen her react to that emotion. Same with her little brothers and friends. She can recognize the emotion but doesn’t seem to care much about it.

As far as her emotional learning, I am in education and spent a lot of time teaching her about emotions and coping mechanisms. I have severe anxiety as does her little brother, so we have put a huge focus on coping mechanisms in our house, which obviously starts with recognizing your emotions to start. We’ve done lessons, games, videos, songs. None of it seems to stick with her, so I bought her several books/workbooks since that’s more her style of learning. I do not think they’re helping much.

The only time I have ever seen her “care” about if someone is upset is when I cry. She’ll ask me what’s wrong. Otherwise, I have never witnessed her try to comfort her brothers or friends. But I mean, I obviously give her space, so maybe she’s doing it when I’m not around.
