Children Detained in America's Prisons are Charged for Underwear, Food, Books, Even Family Visits. This Has to Stop | Opinion

Almost all detention facilities are for profit now. Think about that.

Quick run down of how they make money:

  1. You take nothing in with you. You are stripped naked, strip searched, and issued an orange one piece jumpsuit and one pair of dime store sandals. Nothing else.

  2. You are now being charged a rate somewhere between $35-$100+ per day for your incarceration. This will appear on your court fees if and when you are going to be released. Only a judge can remove this debt.

  3. You will receive 1,800 calories per day. The majority of calories will be 3 pieces of "cake", one piece served with each meal, Breakfast, Lunch, and dinner. (Look up, "Let them eat cake." and why feeding cake to starving people get's you guillotined.)

  4. You'll be sleeping on a metal or concrete "bed". You may or may not be able to acquire a blanket, and or a mat, depending on who has mats and blankets.

  5. The detention facility sells to inmates: blankets for $30, Sleeping mats for $60, Under garments at $10 each (including socks, 2 socks $20), Raman at $5 a pack, tooth paste at $6 a tube, tiny toothbrushes at $6 each, on and on...

  6. Visitors have to pay a visitors fee of somewhere between $25 - $75 a visit.

  7. Phone calls are $2 a minute.

  8. An email, yes, there's censored email available, at $0.50 per 10k words.

  9. Rentals: Books, TV viewing time, A basketball, you name it. All rented out at outrageous fees.

  10. Money is illegal in jail. All commerce in detention centers between inmates is via, fucking Raman Noodles.

Oh, did I mention our prison population is literally starving to death?
