China’s richest man (Jack Ma) donates 500,000 diagnostic kits and 1 million masks to the USA.

Maybe we should stop the endless outsourcing and destruction of our manufacturing sector so that we can maintain our manufacturing ability at home and don't need to depend on other countries during times of crisis like this.

But that would involve American corporations thinking about the national interest and not just their own short term profits, so nah, that won't happen.

This is fundamentally why the US is falling behind globally. Trump made everything a shitton worse to be sure, but the fundamental problem has always been there, which is that corporate special interests have too much influence over US government. These corporate special interests will push for US policies that benefit them and their profits specifically, without regard for the long term national interest.

As a result, US policy, rather than being a cohesive package that furthers the long term national interest, is just a hodgepodge of random policies meant to boost the bottom lines of specific special interests. You have corporations lobbying to outsource so they can make profits. You have military industrial complex lobbying for foreign policy that benefits them. You have fossil fuel industry lobbying against Green New Deal. Etc.
