I think your father has a conservative mindset which is common among the older age group who grew up in a less globalised world and therefore have a more nationalist outlook. They value their own race over others which is a view that is almost impossible to change.

However, the current generation having grown up in a more globalised world who wants just as you said for greater tolerance among all races and religion.

I think he's just misinformed. The effect of Chinese investment on Brunei's sovereignty is completely overblown. The government is currently doing a very good job in keeping Bruneian interests in mind in the Hengyi project.
