Chinese mock Europe for 'being taken over by Muslims' - as more mosques are built in China - CHINESE social media users have outrageously been mocking Europe for "being taken over by Muslims" - as mosques pop up all over China.

The majority of the muhajireen settled in peripheral areas like Gansu, Qinghai, and Yunnan during the Yuan dynasty. There were few Han in those areas at the time so they most likely married Bai, Monguor and other native women in those areas.

The genetics and origin of Muslim peoples like the Dongxiang, Bonan, and Salar are explained by male muhajireen from Central Asia migrating to Qinghai and Gansu and marrying local Tibetan, Monguor and other native women. An additional number of Monguor men converted to Islam which is why Dongxiang-Monguor language prevailed over that of the Central Asian migrants. this can explain the presence of both Central Asian R1A and Mongoloid O Y chromosome Haplogroups among the Dongxiang and why they were called Sarts which is a name for Central Asians. Salars apparently brought some of their own women with them since they retained their Central Asian language.

Yunnan was open to Central Asian and Han migration by the Yuan. Male muhajireen most likely married local Bai women. There are still Bai speaking Hui Muslims today. The larger presence of Han eventually acculturated the Muslims into adopting Han culture and language. Most Han migrants to southern China didn't bring their women and also married native women. Some Han in Yunnan and Gansu were converted to Islam and joined the community like the Kong, Zhang, Wang and other families. Some Han converts even became Dongxiang.

In Gansu and Qinghai, likely a large number of Hui are descendants of Dongxiang or Salar who forgot their languages. The Hui General Ma Fuxiang has Dongxiang origins and his Y chromosome is Hapologroup O so his ancestors were male Monguor speakers who converted to Islam and then adopted Han language and culture, leading him to identify as Hui.
