Stick to the laptops with 10xx NVIDIA GPUs. They are the first generation of laptop GPUs with full desktop performace. The 9xxm series and earlier are all "mobile variants". Meaning they are significantly slower than the desktop GPU using the same name.

The 10xx GPUs don't have this problem. Make sure it has an IPS display. Make sure it does NOT have a TN display.

All that being said, in your price range is a lot of laptops that fall in that category. Your choice comes down to two main variables: display and GPU.

The new dell XPS 15 with a 1050 has a good display. Once calibrated it's often compared to the displays in MacBooks by art/photo/video professionals.

If you're just fine with stock IPS and sRGB, you can prob walk into a local Best Buy, Fry's, etc and pick up an MSI laptop with a GTX 1060. There's some options in the "Quick picks" in this subreddit's side bar (use an actual browser to see it, not an app).

Note: the 9xxm laptops are very often the same price as the new much faster 10xx laptops and that replaced them. Sellers are relying on people not knowing that 10xx laptops are full desktop replacements.
