Allegedly, Rihanna is the one who assaulted Chris Brown. He fought back, but that can't be the story because he'd come off as a punk ass bitch for not being able to "control his woman" and actually getting beat down by her. So he took the hit (literally and figuratively) in order to maintain his image as a bad boy.

Subsequent incidents are a combination of anger issues, trying to keep up appearances, and an inability to admit that he really is a punk ass bitch.
