I wasn't born here, but I'm commenting as someone who was on a watchlist as a child (high risk, underprivileged, parents were fucked, family extremely abusive, severe mental health history, etc), my therapist is sure that if I never met my Mom (she's not my blood mom, but my REAL mom if you know what I mean) at age 7 I would have been a very, very different person in a very bad way. She was that exposure to something else at a critical age. A different way to be. She took me in and changed my life. Children develop around what they're exposed to and looking back on it it's so scary how things could have been vastly, vastly different for me. It was a fluke that I made it out, all the stats were against me and it was literally my Mom definitely saved me (love you, Shannon!!). Thank you for pushing this idea of mentorship -- lots of us just have a crap roll of the dice and just need someone to show us they care and we can make something of ourselves beyond what we were born into!
