Christian interested in what questions you guys have, AMA

I'm not sure if you're still taking questions, but after reading through your answers, I have a couple questions.

Mainly about cherry-picking, since you seem to take issue with 'Liberal theology' and the way it picks and chooses.

Scripture is chalked full of verses that any sane Christian would attribute to 'culture'. For instance, Exodus 21:20-21 is an example of God telling us that human beings can be your property and that you can beat them to the extent that it take them two days to get up. Or, if you accidentally kill them because you're so fucking out of control, you just pay a fine. Why? Because they're your property.

This is not an instance of 'indentured servitude', as many Christians throw out to avoid the topic, and the Old Testament broaches the topic of foreign slaves several times.

So, does your God advocate slavery? Or, do you believe NT passages trump OT passages? Does this mean God changed his mind?

Furthermore, how about the verses that say women must scream if they're being raped in the city? I recently read a study (and I'm trying to find it, give me a moment) that revealed our brains can often shut down in these situations and make it difficult - if not impossible - to scream when being sexually abused. There are several other situations that would contribute to why someone was unable to scream when being raped, as I'm sure you can imagine.

So, why would God create us in a way that made it difficult to scream when we're being raped, but then commanded that if we don't scream when we're being raped, it means we were culpable?

All of this comes to the main point: if you believe those verses to be specific to their cultural context, are you not cherry-picking what is and isn't cultural? You don't like that your God advocated for slavery so you slap 'cultural' on it and walk away?

Or, if you don't believe the verses to be cultural, why the hell would I want to believe in a God that was down with the subjugation of human beings and created us in such a way that we couldn't follow his laws?
