Is a chromebook worth getting to hold me over in college while I decide whether I want a Windows laptop in the future?

Chrome books are like any other kind of system. The more you spend the better performance. A cheap one will run like shit, an expensive one will run a lot better. Asus C302 is $489 and a decent Chrome book. I was getting ready to purchase one and then found a great deal on Newegg.com. They were selling Grade A MacBook Air's with 4 GB Ram, Intel I5, and a 128 GB SSD with an 11.6" HD Screen for $439. I bought on and am so glad I did. You can't even compare the chrome book to Mac Book Air. The chrome book might as well be a cement brick in comparison. Son is very happy with the Mac Book. It is lighter, preforms better in every way, great battery life and is running the newest ver of OS.

Here is link. It's a grade b and a little more pricey, I got mine on sale. Shop newegg and see what they have. They sell excellent refurbished devices.

The only other thing I could suggest which is awesome also is getting a Thinkpad T420 ($199 on Newegg) and load Ubuntu on it. It runs incredibly well and should provide a good experience.
