The grievances they have are real and have to primarily do with how student liasons and faculty have inappropriately responded to issues facing minority students on campus.
This is half the problem, most of the protesters don't even go to the school, they go to PPS. You don't have a clue what goes on here, the faculty and staff have only ever been very supportive, yet here you all come shouting at out president and demanding out staff resign. The simple answer is, fuck off.
The cultural appropriation sign refers to what galvanized the protests; two CMC students were wearing very offensive costumes, and one of the major student council members was pictured in a photo with them (or was one of the two).
That was incredibly mild, and solely a discussion for the two students involved with their mildly distasteful costumers.
There's a letter that specifically airs their issues, detailing specific incidences that have happened at CMC and the staff handling it poorly, including a professor outright calling a student a roach, and economics professors using terms like Welfare Queen (very racially linked) unironically in classes. Murals were also vandalized on campus and some trans and queer posters have been vandalized as well, including a student's "I support trans rights" sign on their door in a gender neutral dorm being made to read "I suppory cis rights," and CMC attempting to throw a party called "Bros, Pilgrims, and Navajos."
100 fucking percent, almost every single "grievance" aired on that sheet was completely uncontextualized, unsubstantiated, required these kids go back 3 years, and yet still were incredibly mild.
The professor called a white student protesting for Palestine a cockroach because he was wearing army fatigues, blocking entrance to a dining hall, and cursing at/nearly assaulting the ethnic Israeli professor.
The welfare queen comment is completely unsubstantiated, has no context, and the simple mention of the word would not be racially motivated.
No murals were vandalized on the CMC campus, take that to Pomona where it actually happened.
The "vandalization" of the gay rights post actually has pictures available online, and consists of a couple of small scratch in one corner where anything could have rubbed against it.
The "vandalization" of the black lives matter poster wasn't vandalism, they were simply taken down because they were extremely aggressive towards a student body which had no negative feelings towards the issue.
The trans-cis thing is fucking nothing, trans was just crossed out and cis written, i.e. what a bored college freshman might think was funny.
The Navajos thing was rough, but also dealt with three years ago when it actually happened.
Spellman was asked to resign partially because she is a figurehead, but in my opinion handled everything very poorly for someone hired to make CMC seem great.
You don't even fucking go here, you never used her office. You don't know what she did. She was incredibly supportive and helpful for students, many are seriously heartbroken that she's gone because a couple of students had an unreasonable vendetta against her.
In an email prior to her announcement, she asked students who had grievances to discuss it with her and they could help them handle how they did not fit "our CMC mold," essentially implying queer students, students of color, and others who experienced incidents on campus of not being desired CMC students.
Are you fucking kidding? Her "mold" comment was towards a student who had just posted an article where she expressed how she had trouble fitting into a stereotypical aspect of the community. She wasn't implying shit, she was purely trying to be supportive towards what this student had expressed.
This is why most of the student body is so fucking pissed, assholes like you come along full of bullshit and try to tell us what we want. Go deal with your own fucking problems.
