Clarksburg

The appropriate wisdom depends on your point of reference and your interests. From where are you moving?

I know someone who considered Gainesville, Florida a big city with skyscrapers. This would draw a laugh even in Columbia, SC. But, to that person, who grew up in a cattle ranching family in Polk County, Florida, anything taller than 4 stories was a “skyscraper.” No mocking here, by the way. That’s just the clearest example to come to mind. That family had bulls worth more than my first house.

I know people who have lived in or just visited Colorado who will spend an hour scoffing at the notion of a “Black Diamond” ski run in WV and who think the mountains of Appalachia should be called foothills.

Meanwhile, another friend from Gainesville worries every time she travels to/from Deep Creek Lake that her flatland car’s brakes are going to fail somewhere on I-68 or I-79. Again, I am not mocking. She’s already been right, once.

It’s as much about where you’ve been as where you’re going.
