Clearly Fat Shaming: Adventure Center in Tahoe Donner HOA Community's Posted Trail Rules

To further explain: I completely understand and fully appreciate the use of and the need for trail rules and etiquette.

In addition, clear and accessible signs and posters throughout a community can remove a lot of guesswork, thus allowing everyone the opportunity to experience the beautiful Tahoe Donner region.

Yet the posted trail guidelines at this particular Tahoe Donner facility does the exact opposite. The posted trail guidelines bulletpoint a range of trail etiquette topics, yet they specifically using the term "Fat Bikers" on one of these bullet points.

This method, perhaps unintentionally, perhaps not, implies that the rule(s) expressed following the term apply to only fat people.

Yet these rules under this bullet point addressing only "Fat Bikers" should, in all reality, be followed by all bicyclists.

Due to our region's specific seasonal weather and it's subsequent effects on various trails, this can and does result in trail closures, not only to maintain the integrity of the trail but also ensure the safety of the community.

Furthermore, this bullet point also addresses the additional issue of rut depth rhay bicyclists can create in connection to the aforementioned .

Firstly, everyone using the trails should check on possible closures for any trail they plan on using that day for any given activity. But only "Fat Bikers" are addressed.

Secondly, I have seen some very fit, (perhaps muscular, dense, tall, et cetera) bicyclists who inherently should also be aware of the ruts they create. But they are not "fat" and thus they need not adhere to this guideline.

My point, as drawn out as it is, is this: why is it necessary for the Tahoe Donner Adventure Center ro use the term "Fat Bikers" to bullet point these guidelines when the guidelines should be heeded by all who use and share the trails.

This seems to me to be insensitive in the very least, and can make individuals who may feel the term "Fat Bikers" is directed solely towards them uncomfortable and unwelcome.

Is this not counterproductive? If an overweight or "fat" individual is bicycling, Tahoe Donner can still uphold the same guidelines while also encouraging the individual's efforts towards self improvement.

Instead, they chose to single them out though the use of blatant derogartory terminology boarding on discrimination.
