Close family friend was able to live with his children after being convicted of abusing his daughter when she was 12. How is this possible?

NAL, but 20 years in mental health, dealing with abused teens.

The fact that he served any jail time at all is surprising. I’ve worked with thousands of female teens and nearly all of them had been sexually abused by close family or friends. It is exceedingly rare for the perpetrators to face even any charges, usually only happening when the abuser is significantly less well off than the victim.

I don’t have an answer for you, other than it is hard to prove and it seems that people in society prefer that they aren’t bothered with being forced to deal with this enormity. General attitudes from people close to the situation usually place the blame on the victim.

My read after 20 years in the field and 43 years of life is just that people are broadly ok with the sexual abuse of minors by adults as long as they act respectably.
