To clarify: Gavin uses the quote to make a point that poor, white, Americans tend to vote for tax breaks rather than social programs because they want to be rich not provided for. I realize that the original context is pro-socialism and is saying that poor Americans are too stupid to vote in their own self interest. I attributed it to Gavin because I like his take that poor Americans want to have money and not have it be taxed. I come from a working family and regard the statement as being true in a vacuum, my relatives that make 30k a year would rather keep their whole 30k than make more via a handout, and also resent paying taxes that go to social programs. I can obviously be long winded and was trying to keep my comment short and succinct and it clearly came off poorly.
