CMV: It's better for employees to be open with each other about how much they are paid

I can tell you what our company does to mitigate what some of the counter arguments are bringing up, yet still provide more clarity.

Every title is assigned a pay grade, the pay grades are consistent. 100% of Paygrade X is $Y. That's company wide. However that's title driven. Example Engineer 1 vs Engineer 2 is different pay grades. Generally you only know your grade They don't publicize the rest. However here is where individual ambiguity and raises etc come in. When going from grade to a new grade, you are brought up at least to 80% of whatever that new paygrade is. The 100% is kind of your target by the time you're ready to move up again. Some may make end up raised to 105% or even 110% in a bad year where promotions are sparse. The max is 120%. Though its unexpected. I dont know my exact percent. HR decided readjust grades for competitive salary so I know I fell slightly by basic math even though my salary didnt change. But in that conversation I was told I feel from smoothly over 100% to mid 90s, and I'm currently in the talks of a title promotion so that aligns.

What this allows me to know is that I'm probably one of the higher paid level <my title>s but only by at most under 20% of my salary. And I should be, I've got seniority on the others and my work is liked enough I'm getting ready to advance. Meaning I've got quality and experience. Theres a lot of folks at the next title that make more than me. Also makes sense. They have seniority and experience on me. But at worst I'll be making 80% of their salaries, and many probably closer.
