Do you know the fable of the boiling frog? The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. It's bullshit but it still works well metaphorically.

"Cancel culture" (it's really just a more modern version of boycotting and it largely tackles actual problems) is the simplest way to prevent the heat from being turned up because nothing else has worked. Harvey Weinstein reportedly sexually harrassed or assaulted over a hundred women and one report likely would have prevented people from working with him and preventing him from getting that much power.

It's also a reaction to the U.S. President failing upwards his entire life and being shitty the whole time. The heat just won't get turned up anymore.
