CMV: Children Should Know What LGBT People Are

There’s a difference between knowing who they are and that they exist and being completely immersed in the culture.

For example, there’s nothing wrong with knowing about gay culture, but kids don’t need to attend drag shows. Drag is inherently sexual and completely inappropriate for children. I’m a fan of drag, I’ve seen every season of RuPaul. That is entertainment for adults.

Kids also don’t need to attend Pride parades with half-naked dudes in leather bondage gear dancing around the streets. Again, it’s simply just not appropriate for kids to see. They don’t need to see straight people doing that either.

Teach your kids what being gay is. That’s fine. They don’t need to experience it first hand. When I was a kid (which wasn’t long ago) we all knew about LGBT people. It’s not a secret. We also didn’t have drag queens reading stories to us.

Some stuff crosses the line. The LGBT community is not exempt from this and they need to be called out when they do. It’s not homophobic or transphobic to do so.
