I agree that outlawing medically unnecessary circumcision of unconsenting people should be the goal, but we are still at a point where this basic respect for bodily autonomy is considered an opinion and a controversial one at that. Society has not yet reached the point of truly considering children people in their own right and this leads to a dangerous sense of entitlement in a lot of cases. Given the backlash against moves to outlaw religious circumcision, I fear for the safety of these children. There were people who vowed to do it themselves if it wasn't allowed in a medical setting! An increase in back alley surgery on infants because we tried to rush progress is not an acceptable outcome.
