CMV: Facial Recognition Software has more pros than cons

!delta I hadn't thought much about the psychological effect of knowing you're being "monitored" all the time.

That said, I still don't think that's the sort of FR that we'll see. When keeping DNA records in a criminal database first started to roll out, you had a lot of opposition to the idea of the government having a complete genetic map of each individual. People thought that profiling, selling data to companies, etc, would be rampant. They were worried you'd be targetted for disease treatmnet, certain types of addictions you might be prone to, etc etc. Very similar to what we see with FR.

But none of that came about, and it's because usage was limited. The DNA database isn't a full genetic sequence, it's just 5 (or so?) specific markers that they need to use to exclude individuals. Lastly, the information is pretty secure, they don't sweep it up from the general population like a drag net, and it's never been sold.

Much of that can also apply to FR. You don't have to let the tech go public, you don't have to allow the government to "monitor" the entire population, and you don't have to sell any of the information you do get.

As far as probation goes, yes there are currently violations for marijuana or other drug use. Some jurisdictions have good drug treatment court systems, others don't. My state is a mixed bag.

I generally don't consider drug violations to be "new crime" violations, however, so that's not what I meant when I was referring to repeat offenders.
