Many of those states already had those bans on the books, but were unable to enforce them due to Roe v. Wade. The direct consequence of it being overturned was that millions of women lost the right to bodily autonomy, instantly.

Step away from the idealism of the founding documents, perform material analysis:

  • Yesterday, I had the legal right to abortion despite what my state's legislature says.

  • Today, I do not have the right.

The state legislature didn't change, the court's ruling did. The Supreme Court took action that resulted in people losing their rights. I think trying to point the finger at individual states is the misdirection; in many states, the legislatures didn't do anything.
