CMV: I find it flattering if people from other cultures want to celebrate my culture and use elements of it

That's pretty disrespectful right there to assume someone is so starved for attention that they'll take any no matter how stereotypical.

I base that on the conversations with people from those cultures, and having travelled the world over many years. Of course, that's only representative of those people who I conversed with. Most people seem proud of anyone showing the slightest interest in their culture or food, much less synchronizing U.S. "fun" holidays with them.

Cinco de Mayo was literally a military victory. Can you imagine celebrating Veterans' Day like this?

I can imagine celebrating fourth of July like that, and in fact pretty much everyone does. Or Veterans Day, or any day off for that matter. Almost all holidays are based on food, family, and fun, pretty much world wide with a bit of mysticism or religion mixed in. I doubt the Mexican people are sitting quietly in church bowing their heads for 24 hours, and in fact they seem to party quite a bit themselves last I checked. I'm sure they're worried about celebrating their military victory in a somber way, anymore than anyone else does.

And who gives a crap how it's celebrated? No one is celebrating by drowning Mexican children or hitting them with sticks like a piñata. They're going drinking or enjoying Mexican food from what I've observed. Hardly grounds for the genocidal eradiation of Mexico, which seems to be the concern that it's going to cause.

History is important here. Historically speaking, Western/Christian culture was something that was forced upon Japan through imperialism. You can't appropriate something that was forced upon you.

Apparently you've never been to Japan. Nor aware that the 1970s marketing campaign that started it, or that a tiny percentage of Japanese are even Christian. Nothing was "forced" upon them regarding my example. You just don't like that its exactly the same thing appropriated by another culture but I don't see anyone up in arms about that. They decided, completely on themselves, to get into it and wait in line on Christmas for a bucket of chicken.

The fact that some Mexican businesses make money off the Americanized Cinco de Mayo does not negate the harmful images and stereotypes that are perpetrated by the way it's often celebrated.

None of which occurs. Please supply sources and lists of the extremely harmful effects of some drunk guy in a sombrero enjoy a culture which has millions of its members in the U.S. celebrating the same thing. They came to the U.S. and brought that extremely fun cultural holiday. No one stole it, they're offering it up through their businesses.

White American people are not "cultureless." They have white American culture and the fact that you view whiteness as some neutral default is itself racist.

I don't view it as neutral, but cultureless people, like the type who have issues with embracing another culture are the racists, as they are the ones who want white American purity with absolutely no introduction of other cultures. To block and deny other cultures influences is racist and segregationist.

Sure, some white guy running around in blackface and eating fried chicken is racist, but saying you can't enjoy rap music or wearing dreads is also racist then. So is celebrating MLK day for that matter if you're a white person.
