CMV: For most middle class Americans in the US, getting health insurance is pointless.

How will it bankrupt me if I just go on a payment plan with them?

At the age of 26 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I had no income, no job, nothing. I was mentally ill. I managed to get surgery and treatment, but the hospital I went to was unimpressed with my $50 per month payment plan. The local district attorney threatened to take away my driver's license under the same legal framework they use to punish parents who were behind on child support. My dad pulled some strings with people he knew at the hospital due to his years as a union representative there and I had my debt paid for using a special program.

You got a bunch of friends at the hospital who will make special arrangements for you if your kid gets cancer like my dad did?
