CMV: Getting your driver’s license at 16 should not leave you set for the next 80 years.

As a survivor of the Santa Monica Farmers' Market crash several years ago, the truth of this derailed my life forever. I feel like most people know at least one elderly person they don't think should be driving, but "mah freedumb" etc, loss of independence blablabla...
We stopped my late father from driving as soon as we felt he might not be the safest driver and he agreed without being shitty about it, as we framed it around concern for his safety as well as in the interest of his newly minted only grandchild's well-being.
Why on earth won't folks err on the side of caution, instead of waiting for misfortune to realize there might have been a better way...?
