CMV: hiring/admitting employees/students based on race/gender/sexual orientation etc. for diversity is inherently discriminatory.

My former company filtered all applicants through an automated diversity tool. This tool went through all the applications with the goal to show hiring managers a set of resumes that matched the companies diversity goals. shrug.

I definitely argued with the CEO (400 person company) that it is unreasonable to expect a more diverse mix of employees than the labor market could provide, so shooting for 50/50 men/women split in an 80/20 labor market wasn't feasible (especially when it seemed like every company in our labor market was trying hit the same out of balance diversity goal), but he wasn't hearing it.

To be clear, I'm all for diversity in the workplace. I wasn't at all arguing the idea that "diversity is stupid, why are we doing this". Just that it their approach seemed to have some inherent flaws, that when every company has the same unrealistic D&I goals someone has to lose (it's a zero sum situation).
