CMV: A lack of empathy predisposes people to being racist/sexist, so we should try to encourage empathy in childhood school curriculum

I'm going to modify your view: I don't think it should come down to schools to teach kids important life lessons. Schools can teach about morality and philosophy, but ultimately personal morality is the prerogative of each of us to determine. It lessons in empathy, anti-racism, etc. should come from our parents and our families long before we hit school age. I have a four year old who is in preschool. He is also in speech therapy and has a hard time communicating, so he ends up yelling (as is normal for his development). Instead of just teaching him that yelling isn't okay, I'll tell him to sit in time out and take breaths to calm down. Sometimes I'll sit and breathe with him if he really needs it. Then I'll ask him if he feels happy or sad when mom or dad yell at him, and tell him that's how he makes us feel. This is the most basic lesson in empathy that I can teach him. I think the majority of the onnus falls on me as a parent to teach those things. They can be expanded upon in school, and the philosophical roots dissected later in school so students can identify where they stand, but one of the biggest contributors of our personal morality is that of our parents.
