CMV: Liberal Americans are justified to be angry with Trump supporters and to worry about the future

The electoral college does not treat all votes equally, which is what I think OP was trying to get at. The issue that I think a lot of people have is an important one, even if it's rooted in a semantic misunderstanding of our government.

You see, we keep getting told that we're a democracy. Democracies run by the following (very simplified) premise: whoever gets the most votes wins.

Since we're actually a republic, this isn't the case. Aggravating this misunderstanding are practices like gerrymandering, which further limits the power of the individual voter.

The electoral college was, in the past, a great way to make it so that rural communities had a fair voice in politics. Presently, the issue with that is that within these (mostly republican) communities, efforts are being made to limit who can vote via voter registration laws. No longer is the focus in making sure that the community is truly heard. Rather, the focus now is on making sure the states stay the right color. Couple that with many people in traditionally red or blue states not voting because they know it won't matter, and you have major problems with disenfranchisement.

And, too, the fact that the electoral college was designed with the intention of still representing the majority, and that only four times in history has it not represented the popular vote. Two of those times being within the past 20 years, both times swaying the election from democrat to republican. Basically, no one likes losing on a technicality that is potentially the effect of abuse within the system.
