CMV: Liberals Truly Against Racism Should Oppose Monuments Being Taken Down

How familiar are you with the organizing efforts of black groups like BLM and BYP100? I worked professionally in Democratic politics for years, many years of which were exclusively on black issues working alongside an entirely black team.

I am not denying these statues are offensive - they are to me, and they are to most liberals (let alone most black liberals). However, there is a reason that organizing efforts haven't focused on it until now when they can sort of ride the coattails of a populist in the streets sentiment.

I am now realizing my view is more appropriate to be discussed at the high levels of leadership of organizers, and at the coalition strategy level - not among the average citizen not acquainted with organizing strategy, political communications, and necessary tradeoffs.

It results in utter confusion, or even invective as you have demonstrated, pointing the finger and doing what so many liberal activists do, using the tribalistic otherness strategy in lieu of any real understanding "you're willing to protect the feelings of racists..."

I am quite saddened by the response here, but I am hopeful in talking with leadership of activist organizations - for they are in a very, very different place than their base.
