CMV: Lootboxes are fine

We totally alter things based on addiction. Coke used to be legal. Alcohol and cigarette ads are highly regulated. You can't drink in an alcohol commercial in the US. We have tons of gambling laws and regulations. The casinos are obligated to let people know their odds. We've highly regulated pain killers and other pills because of opioid epidemic.

PS4, Xbox, and Switch just recently made it so publishers have to reveal their odds for lootboxes. The problem is not just the pay2win aspect, which is a huge issue for gaming and consumers, but with the fact that often we have zero idea the odds of getting a certain item. So even when you have lootboxes where all content can be unlocked in game, if a person still decides to not sink the hours needed, they don't know their chance of getting a certain item. They could think that their chances are higher and spend more money. Or the game could make the content unlock-able after an amount of time that isn't realistic.

You could say "oh that's up to the person to avoid this all", but I don't see why you'd not want an industry to regulate itself based on consumer backlash or have federal regulations that make sure publishers can't screw over the people who are using their hard earned money to buy their games.
