CMV: Mac computers are overpriced, and you can always get an objectively better PC.

There is no objectively better in this equation because it's not as simple as a hardware-to-price ratio.

Linux is great for programming if that's all you ever want to do. If you like to use your computer for virtually anything else without being limited to the "offbrand" apps, it's not so great. However, there are many distinct mac-only applications (especially for web developers) which improve the development experience.

I'm gonna argue my point purely from a development point of view because that's why I own a mac. While there used to be a lot less developers on mac, there's been a huge surge in popularity over the past few years that has seen a lot of developers moving to the mac environment. And there's a good reason. The Mac experience is the best all-in-one that you can get right now. It has all the whistles of unix but it's risen up to be accepted by the masses. That means that you aren't restricted when using the OS. There's every flavor of application that you could want on top of the fact that it can dual boot Windows (important for many cross platform developers) as well as have an unbeatable workflow. While there are hackintoshes, certainly, it is hard to do without varying levels of bugs.

As a gamer, it may be hard to understand because you are not the target audience. You aren't even close to the target audience. While it may seem that gamers and programmers are close in terms of desires, it couldn't be further from the truth (unless the gamer happens to be a programmer, of course). Honestly, I'd say that programmers and graphic designers are much closer in terms of what they look for in a laptop. It's all about the workflow, the applications that you have available, and the little things that add up in the OS that makes balancing work/lifestyle activities easier.

I own a desktop PC that I built myself as well. It's an awesome PC and it houses my steam library which never seems to stop growing. When I want to game, I go to the PC. But when I want to work, there's no substitute for my mac.

If I was a broke college kid, I wouldn't spend an extra $1k. I'd go with the cheaper option. But as an adult with a good job and the extra disposable income, it is worth it to me because it makes working infinitely more enjoyable.
