As a preface, I am extremely left leaning but have you considered our geography? Can you name another country that is the size of the United States, has first world status and has a crime addled third world country at its border?

When people cite say Australia for their gun laws, I laugh. They are extremely isolated and the sheer logistics of transporting weapons illegally into the country is so costly its a geographical bottleneck. But getting cheaply made guns from Asia into Mexico is probably extremely easy, and its probably even easier for the cartels to run guns up the border. What's more our border is so massive its impossible to secure it fully.

I don't like to talk about the Mexican border stuff because it always leads to accusations of racism etc. But I think its ignorant to say that the United States is arbitrarily "no different" than any other country when our relationship with Mexico is extremely unique and quite pronounced due to the size of both countries.
