CMV: Moving away from US to a European country like Romania with my family is the best thing we ca do for the future of our daughter.

Thank you for taking the time to write your experience.

1) Living in a country that isn't your homeland (even if she is more familiar with the culture than a complete foreigner), and not being able to speak the language fluently could possibly lower a child's self confidence and independence (How outgoing is your daughter?)

She's very outgoing and she's excited to learn the language. I try to have Romanian lessons with both of them daily and I think my daughter would be able in a year or so to communicate fairly well. If we make the step, I will have to spend lots of time working with her so she doesn't fall behind in the beginning until she gets a hang on the language.

2) If you return to the US, your daughter will probably find she cannot relate to her peers that much anymore (and her classmates/friends won't understand the return culture shock) , and unless she can adapt, she will begin to feel isolated.

Yes, I agree, if we live in Romania for few years, it will be hard for her to reintegrate back here. I don't think it would be a problem if after one year we decide to come back. My wife could hate it there, vacationing it's nice, but living there, not having a job, could be a challenge for her (though I think she could find a English teaching job easy).

3) Split identity problems. She may feel "nationless" (I certainly did), unable to identify as either Romanian or American.

I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or a good thing. How did you deal with this problem when you got older?

4) If she goes to a Romanian speaking school, she will either integrate quickly or feel like an outsider. It will require a serious commitment from you and your wife, and Romanian family to stop this from happening.

I think she will integrate quickly. We have family there in the City and she'll have more connections outside of the family there than she has now here. The language is the biggest problem but, if she goes to a Romanian school, I think she will learn it fast.

Thank you again for your input.
