I may misunderstand, so please correct me if so -

I think this is a good representation of what is happening. NATO as a unit wouldn’t fight a war in SE Asia. NATO is an alliance of European nations that agree to defend each other if any one of them is attacked from nations outside the alliance. Unless a SE Asian nation attacked a NATO nation, what happens there is none of NATO’s business. The US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq/Syria are not about NATO; NATO nations are fighting there as a “favor” to the US, and to reduce the effectiveness of the Taliban/ al Qaeda/ ISIS in attacking Europe. The US had to approach each of its allies, which included some non-NATO nations, and request their help.
