CMV: We need to normalize mixed people identifying as mixed in America

Where I live there isn’t really a black community, and I don’t really know any black people.

Most black people here are military members who stick to themselves.

I identify as mixed race. I identify as black in the same way I identify as white, it’s a part of my heritage but I am not either or. I don’t feel a connection to the black race due to my partial ancestry.

I remember it was really weird going to a high school that had some mainland American white girls attending.

There was this girl who was from the mainland, who wanted to befriend me because she was weirdly obsessed with black/mixed girls and wanted to have a mixed child.

That was really really weird. That’s when it first hit me that on the mainland, I guess for some social circles people think being “black” is trendy.
