I'm not talking about single-handedly ending Nazism by talking to people. I'm talking about changing a single person's mind who may not really even be that entrenched in it to begin with.
Again. We are talking about ACTUAL NAZIS. Not mildly racist people. Not intolerant people. Not right leaning people. ACTUAL NAZIS. If someone has reached ACTUAL Nazism, they are firmly entrenched. Nazism is to racism as ISIS is to radical Islam. It's the dial turned up to 11. It is NOT something that someone only lukewarm on its concepts would be supporting
If I hear someone spouting off white supremecist shit, I have no idea if that person is a violent racist or just some disgruntled suburban kid who thinks he's being an edgy rebel. And I'll never know unless I talk to him.
You keep trying to shift this discussion towards the centre. I am not talking about mild white supremacists. I am talking about dyed in the wool supporters of Nazism
So at that point, the potential exists for me to hear him out, and possibly (not probably, but possibly) bring him around. Whereas your method of ostracizing and shaming is going to do nothing but guarantee that whatever feelings of alienation he already had that drove him to this little rebellion are going to deepen.
And guarantee that they are unable to manifest in harmful ways.
All you're doing is trying to tell me why being civil won't work, but you've provided nothing to explain why it's a BAD idea. Unless you're suggesting that what I should do instead is just pull out my gun and shoot them on the spot.
Because by being civil, you are giving them a platform. The appearence of legitimacy. You are creating the false impression that there is in fact a debate to be had. Arguing with a Nazi is like arguing with a Flat Earther. Their position is so utterly outside the bell curve of reasonability that discussion is IMPOSSIBLE. You are not just using differing opinions. You are arguing based on different FACTS. It is literally impossible to argue with someone once that point is reached. Debate requires a common respect for evidence. Nazis have all the evidence in the world stacked against them already AND STILL THEY BELIEVE. That is a position that no debate will ever change and having the debate allows them to equate their fictions with your facts.
