CMV: Open carry of guns in the United States is foolish and it causes more trouble than good.

Here is my take.

Open carry isn't about protesting. It's not about sending a message. If ANY message, it would be "I fear for my life, and wish access to the best tools I have to protect myself from danger. But I don't wish to be sneaky about it, the world should know I'm armed."

That's really it. If you support the ability to arm yourself generally, open carry is more honest about what's going on. People aren't hiding their weapon, they are letting you know. A criminal will generally conceal it. They don't want you to know they have it until they decide to use it. It's an unexpected "ace in the sleeve". With open carry, you aren't hiding anything. It's an active deterrent from criminals because A: You could possibly be their last crime and B: Even if they beat you in a shootout, there was the loud BANG that says "Crime happening over here!"

In many places, open carry is legal specifically for this reason. It's upfront that you are armed, and you wont surprise anybody. People like to compare to the "wild west days" with this, and it's surprisingly a great comparison. Do you know how often there was a good old "wild west shootout"? Almost never. The reason is simple. Say you are a criminal with two pistols, 6 rounds apiece, for a total of 12 rounds. You walk into a bar with 20 people, 10 are armed. Even if they only have one gun, that's 60 rounds against you. Nobody wants those odds.

If everybody open carried would there be shootouts? Well, yeah... There are now, it's not really going to change anything. But what does it change? As a civilian, if I am unarmed and a man walks into where I'm at with a gun... I'm powerless. If the cops don't respond immediately then my life is in the criminals hands. I don't like that. If I have a gun, well at least the odds are better.

Additionally, have you ever noticed how if a cop is in a stressful situation, simply having a gun will get you shot? This is because people commonly dont have guns. So when an innocent person has one, it's instantly a red flag. If it was common that people had guns visible, this reduces the stressful "red flag" that causes accidents on duty when they see a civilian with a weapon.

Open carry is nothing more than saying "I am armed because the world is dangerous. But I want you to know about it, because you have the right to know I am armed." I'd gladly support banning conceal carry if it meant that open carry would be embraced.
