CMV: I think politicians who continue to call for accepting refugees are brave and are doing the right thing.

I asked this legitimately... because I haven't found one. Comparing "yearly averages" is a pointless task because you're simply taking an average total and dividing it up... You're not taking into account when Canada accepted a large amount because of a large humanitarian crisis. Your camp has nothing but fear mongering and says vague things like "just look at the odds", and "it it's just too fast"... but you have no real numbers to back that up. Not only that, but the experts say we can accept them. And they actually have facts instead of vague circular reasoning.

  • In 1776 we accepted 3 000 escaped slaves from the US. This was at a time when the entire population of Canada was well under 100 000 people.
  • In 1956 we accepted 37 000 Hungarian refugees in less than a year (Source), which was a culmination of accepting nearly 100 000 Hungarian refugees/immigrants in ~25 years.
  • In 1968 11 000 Czechs fled to Canada. Source
  • In 1972 we accepted 7 000 Ismalis fleeing Idi Amin. Source
  • In December of 1979 we accepted 23,583 refugees into Canada escaping from the Khmer Rouge. (Source) And that was during a time of fewer resources/technology and a smaller Canadian population. And we accepted 60 000 before the end of 1980. Source
  • In 1992 we accepted 5 000 Bosnian Muslims. Source

And yes, statistically every year we accept on average 10 000 refugees per year and 250 000 immigrants. But more importantly, at times of crisis, Canada has historically been there for refugees... And that's the Canada I support.
