I’m not saying we should prosecute every violent act against women as a hate crime. The context of the offence is, of course, important, just like how not every crime against LGBTQ persons, POC, etc, are hate crimes.

I think that it’s more a matter of the fact that we just don’t look at these kinds of crimes with any kind of consideration for whether it’s a hate crime or not. There was one case where I’m from where a man had raped something like 16-17 women, and he was imprisoned maybe 2 or 3 times, but continued to offend until he eventually he raped and murdered a woman. Looking at the established pattern, how could those offences not be a candidate for hate crime?
