CNN goes entire week without reaching 1 million viewers

Up until recently I was a print journalist for more than a decade. Seldom if ever watched broadcast news. Didn't watch the local stuff because I was a crime reporter and would get irritated at how they pimped out the gun violence in my city. I mostly stick to reading digital/print, specifically, financially-focused pubs; writers are far more objective when things are money-focused (think WSJ, Bloomberg, FT).

Anyway. Turned on cable news for the first time in a long time about last year. It was a god damn clown show. It wasn't news, but straight up entertainment. This applies to all of the major networks on cable.

If I had to boil it down, the problem is advertising. It is why the cable media has become so sensational. On the digital side, clicks — and not engagement — dictate whether a news pub survives. And the majority of the pipes for digital advertising are controlled by Google and, to an extent, Facebook.

Any who. I'll get off my soapbox now.
