CNN: Here's how to make the Oscars more watchable. Show exclusive movie clips during the show, more reaction shots, nominate more blockbusters, and start earlier.

The question of what makes a film good is 100% subjective, as is deciding what the best film is. Its impossible to quantify.

For a lot of folk the best film is quite simply the one that they enjoy the most, and blockbusters are designed to be easy watching, enjoyable films. And are also (frequently) the only films people see at the cinema, and in some cases are literally the only films people see at all.

So for those folk, seeing Best Film continually going to stuff that isn't the sort of thing they watch, it tells them that the Oscars isn't relevant or worth paying attention to.

If Best Film sometimes went to a blockbuster, sometimes went to an artsy thing, sometimes went to a hard hitting real life story, etc, the entire thing would feel much more relatable to a lot more people.
