I was coaxed into a 6 hour long recruitment meeting

Am I the only one who thinks it's absolutely ridiculous to spend $50 for a birthday gift for ANY kid I'm not related to? I grew up in the birthday culture of bringing gifts to parties. I even had to forego going to some parties as a kid because my parents couldn't afford to buy a gift. When my own child has parties (admittedly, still a toddler) we ask that everyone bring a handmade card or drawing. Even though we clearly celebrate birthdays and holidays, our house is still overflowing with made-in-china goods that come every year from extended family, etc. I just hate the message it sends to kids that essentially creates this caste society or hierarchy of whom you want to invite to your party because of their gift and where it's about quantity over quality as well as this complete sense of entitlement. That's exactly what I find wrong with MLM shills too when they're blowing up social media going "Um, how dare you buy that aveda salon shampoo when you could buy a far more inferior product from me for more money?!"
