College students of Reddit, what advice do you have for high schoolers?

depending on your major, go to a university straight away and not a community college. it saves time, and is not that large of a money difference. it can also help you on internships greatly. only do this if you know what you want to do

in my state, like most states, you can transfer from a state CC to a state university and any associates transferred will clear out the ~40 hours required for the general education requirements -- even though an associates is 60 hours. so unless you can get an associates in the same degree as a bachelors and they transfer 1:1, then you are spending 20 extra hours to save a little bit of money.

due to my major, I was completely fucked on internships. every internship wanted certain classes taken before you were ever considered. these are classes that you would normally have completed by semester 2 or 3 at just about every university(i looked at nearly every uni in my state, and that was the case)

however, due to me going to CC first, that was not the case. I had completed my associates in 2 years and because I had taken zero classes related to my major, internships were impossible. if I had gone to university from the start, I would have been able to apply for internships by the time I finished my associates. except I could not do that until I was 3 years into my degree. but because I spent an extra 20 hours getting my associates at a community college, I had to pick between 12 hour summer classes to graduate on time, vs internship.

is every major and internship the same? nah. but almost universally across the board, you do save time by going to a university from your first semester instead of community college. or at the very least, don't have to take such heavy course loads.
