Why is “coming of age” always used when defining generations? It’s so arbitrary

Because thats when most people on average start having a more adult leaning mentality and physicality. Nobody hits puberty at the same exact age of course, sometimes people get those traits at 16 or at 21 but more commonly at 18. To me it makes no sense to use college years as a part of your generational influence since our pre adulthood years are for the most part where our intellect as well as maturity isn't as developed so we are more easily influenced by things during this period and it shapes who we are as a person later compared to adulthood when for the most part one is not easily as influenced & is able to think on their own more.
