Commander's Social Contract

It's funny, because to most people in this community (and it's obvious from a lot of the comments posted here), the "spirit of EDH" is long, mid-rangey games with ludicrous board states and two-hour battles royale.

Whereas Word of God seems to suggest that the actual "spirit of EDH" is working together to make sure everyone's on the same page and everyone can enjoy the game. To that end, it would seem that the person who simply expects their opponents not to be running any of that person's own laundry list of "unfun" cards is violating the spirit of EDH just as much as the one who expects their turn 3 storm deck to be ok.

The PlayEDH Discord server is pretty good about making sure to preserve the actual spirit of EDH, with allowing people to select color-coded tags to indicate what power level they prefer and requirements for discussion the power level of matches when looking for groups. It also does a good job of making it obvious that people who fall all along that continuum are welcome and that none of them are right or wrong, and the only thing wrong to do is to go into a game with certain expectations without confirming that your opponents have similar expectations. That, in my opinion (and I'd argue in Sheldon Menery's too, at least from this quote) is the only true way to violate the spirit of EDH.
