Common Christian Misconceptions

In the time of Jesus, a Jewish believer stood up and began reciting the history of Scripture. "In the time of Noah, God flooded the world for it's sin..."

A Jewish woman shouted from the crowd: "What!? God flood the world!? But that means you are saying that God kills babies and children! You are a lover of violence, and you are vitriolic!"

The believer continued to recite history until he came to Egypt. "God's final judgement was to strike down their firstborn. What's interesting is that Egypt had first fed Israel's firstborn to the crocodiles, so it was an ironic judgement, and God seemed to be paying them back for their evil ways..."

The Jewess: "WHAT!? Paying them back!? There's nothing about that in Scripture! Stop telling us what YOU say about God and tell us what Scripture says about God! Don't you know that God loves people? You are sick and immoral for teaching this garbage!"

The believer: "And so, at last, we come to the time of Joshua, where God ordained war on Canaan, the corrupt and wicked city. This is similar to his judgements on Sodom, Gomorrah, Babylon and so on..."

Jewess: "This gets worse and worse! You are saying that soldiers killed babies and that GOD told them to! That is the sickest thing I've ever heard! How about you start teaching us the Scriptures instead of your vitriolic rubbish!"

Believer: "And so we come to when we Jews were taken as captives to Babylon, and we suffered for a long time. We were judged by God for our evils ways, and judgement fell even upon our young. But God provided a plan of redemption through the coming Messiah-"

Jewess: "What!? Jews and Jewish children, even Jewish BABIES suffer in Babylon because of God's judgement!? Oh, horrendous! Does your violence know no end!? This is what you support! Well guess what: my God loves people! He doesn't murder babies! But that is what you advocate!"

That is sick and immoral, and the Bible does not support it. In nearly a month, you have yet to prove that the Bible supports this.

Finally, this believer turned and said to her: "Look, judgements are never pleasant. But if anything, God was in fact being merciful, because the innocent went to heaven..."

Jewess: "What!? There's nothing about that in Scripture!"

Believer: "So you think God killed them out of spite or revenge, and not out of mercy?"

Jewess: "Well, um, ah... well I don't even believe God DID do any of those things! It doesn't matter that they're written in Scripture because the so-called "wars ordained by God" and all the rest were just written by people long after the time, so they're not reliable. Just ask the historians."

Believer: "This whole time haven't you been telling me you wanted to hear what Scripture says about God? And every time I tell you, haven't you said that the words come from my own mouth, and not from Scripture? But now you tell me you don't even believe what's written!"

Jewess: "No! YOU'RE the one who doesn't believe Scripture because you haven't said a single thing about Scripture in over a month, only what YOU say! This is what you support! Look at it! THAT is what you advocate! And that is why you are sick!"

Believer: "I think we both know I don't support that. But come. Jesus will arrive soon from Galilee, and will settle this."

Sure enough, the time arrived for Jesus to return and the Jewess ran lovingly and joyfully towards him: "Oh, Jesus! I'm a big fan! I've had to bear so many lies about your Father: one believer in particular even said your Father murdered innocent Egyptian babies! And that he sent a flood in Noah's time that killed children! And that he ordained wars in the testament! He even had the nerve to say that God was MERCIFUL for doing so! But I told him: "That is barbaric! God would never do that! And if he did, I would assume that he is not God, but Hades of the Romans or some other evil creature! Any God who truly did those terrible things would be evil and vitriolic! So, Jesus, you can see how much I love and respect your Father, can't you, Jesus? I bet you're very happy with how much I've been standing up for God! And I am so loyal to God, that I said: it doesn't matter that Scripture says he ordained wars or anything else, because God would never do that! Those sources are unreliable because they were written by historians after the fact- which I'm sure you well know, Jesus. There's no way YOU could believe such nonsense. So from that you can see how much respect I have for the Word, as well! Aren't I like Paul the Apostle? And don't you love me so so much, that you don't mind me not believing all of Scripture, the very Scripture you taught from in the synagogues and even quoted against the devil himself in the wilderness, to defeat him? Don't you love me so much that you don't mind me teaching my children to do the same? Don't you also love me so so much, that you don't mind me not living a holy life?"

And here is a second parable:

A mother stood by the side of a fiery pit, and on the other side were the meadows of Eden. Her husband said: "Dear, do you love me? Well then throw one of these children over the pit to the other side."

The woman without hesitation grabbed her child and threw the thing over the flaming pit, joyfully shouting: "I trust you Jesus!!!" and the child landed on the grass safely. "Look at what a good mother I am, Jesus!" she said, "I nursed my children when they were sick, and took very good care of them! Aren't I a good mother? I am such a good, delicate flower of a mother that I could never believe God would cause children to die, rather than risk them falling into this fire forever. My children will remember me as the good mother I always was."

Her husband said: "Do you love me? Well then throw the other over."

Without hesitation she took her child, which she had nursed on her own breast, and cast this over the fiery pit, but as it flew over the fires, time caught up, and this child suddenly changed into an adult before the woman's eyes. This person struck the edge of the pit and fell into the flames. Seeing this, the mother went white and wailed loudly: "I didn't think it could end like this! I was such a good mother! And I loved my child so much! Why did you betray me, Jesus? I wonder, now, if I would rather it had died young, than met such a fate..."

A voice from heaven said: "As ye have done unto others, so it shall be done unto you." The ground fell away below that woman's feet, and she, too, fell into the flames.

Your future is in your own power. Do what you like with it.
