Is it common for college students to major in something they didn't like/do well in high school?

The majority of people major in something they don’t particular “like”. College is primarily just a job training factory, mixed in with a little bit of academic fluffing so that the university can keep you around long enough to squeeze out some extra dollars. And if someone is trying to get the most reliable result from something that exists primarily as a job training factory, they’re likely to major in something business or STEM related (“STEM” most often translates to, “I studied software engineering”).

Their true interest that they might instead have pursued in a perfect world might be something like philosophy or even photography, but that’s a less reliable and lucrative path to go down. Especially when considering the enormous cost of actually obtaining the degree.
