Is it common for parents to give their teenagers curfews?

This was before smartphones or even mobile phones were a widespread thing for teens:

Between 12 and 16 years old, I was supposed to tell my parents where I am, and in case I stay longer or do something else, call them from my friends home or a public phone to specify when I think I'll be home, and expected to be there before 8 or 9 pm, if not previously discussed. My parents were pretty chill and my younger sister and I often stayed out longer. They knew we were together, nearby, very trustworthy and have responsible friends (no alcohol, no drugs, no smoking - not kidding we were really boring teens).

After 17 I could pretty much do what I want. As long I call if I don't come home for dinner or plan to stay overnight at a friends place (or my boyfriend - my parents were fine with that as well), but it was more about informing them not to wait for me then asking.
