Is this common or do my Japanese friends & coworkers just suck

If it is a Japanese company, asking Kacho is the key, as they will find out who will sign for you. They see it as their responsibility. If you don’t get them involved they might feel let down that you didn’t ask them for help. (If it is a NJ company, it doesn’t matter too much at all).

If you have college friends who speak Japanese, almost anyone can be a contact. Still, most people hear “guarantee company” and “sign the contract” together ans most remember being schooled by their family of the dangers of signing for someone else unless they are family. It’s a misunderstanding, but in Showa Japan, people lost a lot of money and property by co-signing, so that is why companies will usually take care of it.
